Red Hawk students found a creative and generous way to give back this holiday season. Mr. Verwys’s homeroom students decided to adopt a soldier, PFC Castenada, currently serving in Kuwait.
Adopt-A-Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks to show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed. It connects civilians with deployed troops and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The 6th graders and their families generously donated well over 75 items including, food, candy, toiletries, cookies (made at the last minute to stay fresh for the trip!), books, air fresheners, and more. One student, Brielle S., went so far as to sew a blanket for Castenada. As students brought in their donations, the one box that the class had committed to filling soon overflowed and in the end, the classes donations filled five boxes! The student’s generosity will not only provide some holiday cheer for PFC Castenada, but at least 4 of his fellow servicemen and women as well. These young people are great role models for understanding the value of giving. What a great way to start the holiday season.
